BakClash is a singing competition for gay men and trans women with remarkable vocal skills and natural wit. The segment premiered on 8 October 2018 and concluded on 30 March 2019.
The contest is a subsegment of Juan for All, All for Juan: Bayanihan of d' Pipol. Its title is a spoof of the 2018 reality talent competition The Clash, which was hosted by Regine Velasquez.
Jerricho "Echo" Calingal of Tondo, Manila was hailed as the grand winner of the competition. Subsequently, he joined the roster of Dabarkads co-hosts because of the natural sense of wit and humor that he demonstrated as a contestant throughout the competition.
Months after the conclusion of the segment, four of the segment's contestants released their first and only single titled "Boom Shala" as a group known as BakClash Divas. The group is composed of Neurie Talaman, Divette Delfin, EJ Salamante, and grand winner Echo Calingal. The group was officially introduced on Eat Bulaga! on Saturday, 10 August 2019 as the first-ever gaypop group of the Philippines.
Overview
Auditions
The contest was open to gay men and transgender women who can not only sing well, but are also naturally comical and witty.
The first few contestants of the competition were known stand-up comedians who regulary performed at Klownz, Zirkoh, and other comedy bars around Metro Manila. Hence, the early contestants knew each other very well and called Allan K (owner of Klownz and Zirkoh) as their boss live on television.
Eventually, auditions were opened up to the masses who aspired to joined the competition. The open auditions were held at the Broadway Centrum.
Luzon tournament
Daily rounds
The daily rounds were held on weekdays from 8 October 2018 to 25 January 2019. They were held on the featured barangay venues of Juan for All, All for Juan: Bayanihan of d' Pipol and were collaboratively presented by the barangay hosts and the studio hosts.
Each daily round featured two contestants who performed their song choices on a makeshift stage in front of a live barangay audience. After their performances, contestants were asked to comment on each other's performances or even to provide their own rendition of their opponent's song.
Afterwards, they performed excerpts of up to three songs that were randomly selected for them in the same-song challenge. In the question-and-answer portion, they must then respond within 30 seconds to a simple question of why they should win the round. The challenges gave the contestants an opportunity to show their humorous and witty personalities.
Daily round winners received a cash prize of ₱10,000 and became a reigning BakClasher. They must then return to the daily rounds each week to defend their title against a new challenger until they earn seven colored sashes—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet—which followed the seven conventional colors of the LGBT rainbow flag. Any reigning BakClasher who manages to earn seven sashes was inducted into the BakClash Hall of Divas and advanced to the next round of the competition.
If a challenger successfully defeats any of the reigning BakClashers, then he or she gains the title as a new reigning BakClasher. Meanwhile, the defeated reigning BakClasher will only lose one sash and could be invited back to the competition in the BakBakClash rounds. If the BakClasher victoriously returns to the daily rounds, then he or she must re-earn the lost colored sash and then continue his/her way toward the BakClash Hall of Divas.
Only ten reigning BakClashers could be inducted into the BakClash Hall of Fame.
BakBakClash
The BakBakClash rounds were held on Saturdays. Contestants who lost in the daily rounds were given the opportunity to compete in the segment once more.
The rounds were held on the featured barangay venues of Juan for All, All for Juan: Bayanihan of d' Pipol and were collaboratively presented by the barangay hosts and the studio hosts.
The BakBakClash rounds followed the same format as the daily rounds. Two contestants performed their song choices and then criticized each other's performances. They then showed their comical sides in the same-song challenge and the question-and-answer portion.
Each BakBakClash winner returned as a challenger in the daily rounds the following week. He or she was given the opportunity to select one of the reigning BakClashers whom he/she would like to go up against. If the contender manages to defeat the reigning BakClasher in the daily round, then he or she becomes the new reigning BakClasher.
