Eat Bulaga's Lenten Special is an annual drama anthology that replaces the noontime show's regular programming in observance of the solemnity of Holy Week. Standalone episodes of short dramas are shown from Holy Monday to Holy Wednesday, with each episode having a different story, cast, director, and writer.
The special programming features heart-wrenching stories that convey important lessons about life and family as the hosts of the noontime show take a break from their usual funny selves to reveal a much more serious side. The hosts are usually joined by guest actors and well-respected directors of the television and movie industries.
Overview[]
The noontime show's observance of the Holy Week can actually be traced back in 1980, making it a tradition for the noontime show. Eat Bulaga! showed a special presentation of its reenactment of the Passion of Jesus Christ, where it ran its rendition of the 1973 musical drama film Jesus Christ Superstar with Vic Sotto as Jesus and Joey de Leon as Pilate.
In 1981, Eat Bulaga! officially started suspending its regular programming to observe the sanctity and the solemnity of the Holy Week. The show is replaced with short dramas from Holy Monday to Holy Wednesday featuring serious stories that teaches important life lessons about hope, inspiration, family, and love. That year's drama specials was directed by renowned Filipino director Lino Brocka.
After 2008, Eat Bulaga! stopped producing new episodes for its Lenten special anthology, ending the annual tradition after more than two decades. According to Malou Choa-Fagar, the Lenten specials were halted because the audience was more receptive on doing regular programming, especially since the trend back then was game shows. Only one new episode was produced in 2008 titled "Ang Mga Anak ni Maestro". Either regular programming or previous episodes of the anthology were aired from 2008 to 2013.
In 2013, EB's noontime competitor It's Showtime starts creating their own lenten specials; in response, Eat Bulaga! showed the replay of their past Lenten Specials: The Manager, Ganyan Kita Kamahal, and Tahanan. In 2014, new episodes for Eat Bulaga's Lenten Special were produced once again after a six-year hiatus. This time, the episodes were inspired by true-to-life stories of former winners of Juan for All, All for Juan: Bayanihan of d' Pipol. The Lenten offerings have been aired annually since then.
Production of new episodes was halted in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 because of the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down the television industry across the globe in an effort to mitigate the spread of the virus. Replays of previous episodes were aired instead. In 2021, Eat Bulaga! had a different format for their lenten special, in which they did a talk show segment tackling the topics from several featured Bawal Judgmental episodes; with EB's hosts, several Bawal Judgmental choices, and Fr. Fiel Pareja as speakers.
And in 2024, after an almost 5-year hiatus and coincides to the show's 45th anniversary, Eat Bulaga! will again produce and air fresh episodes of the Lenten Special produced now by TVJ Productions and to be aired on TV5.
"Nag-iisa", the inspirational single written and composed by Tito Sotto for the Broadway Boys, has served as the official soundtrack for the show's Lenten Specials since 2018.
Accolades[]
At the PMPC Star Awards for Television, Jose Manalo received the Best Single Performance by an Actor in 2014 for the "Pangalawang Bukas" episode of the 2014 Lenten Special. Alden Richards was nominated for the same category in 2016 for his performance in the "God Gave Me You". In 2017, Alden Richards was renominated and won the Best Single Performance by an Actor for his role in the "Kapatid" episode of the 2017 Lenten Special.
In 2016, Jake Ejercito was awarded the Best New Male TV Personality for his acting debut in "God Gave Me You" at the PMPC Star Awards for Television.
In 2015, Keempee de Leon was awarded the Best Single Performance by an Actor for the "Kulungan Kanlungan" episode of the 2014 Lenten Special at the Gawad Tanglaw Awards.
In January 2019, Eat Bulaga's Lenten Special was awarded the Best TV Special at the 3rd Guild of Educators, Mentors, and Students (GEMS) Hiyas ng Sining Awards.

Eat Bulaga's Lenten Special 1981 aired from 13 to 15 April 1981. Joey de Leon revealed in a BTS that Lino Brocka, one of the greatest Filipino directors directed this special, and it was set in a prison.

Eat Bulaga's Lenten Special 2019 aired from 15 to 17 April 2019, with a total of three episodes. This year's Lenten special coincides with the 40th anniversary celebration of the noontime show. The episodes were shot in Benguet, General Santos City, and Japan. The credits at the end of all three episodes features photos of the Dabarkads' trip to the Holy Land the month before.
After this year's edition, Eat Bulaga's Lenten Special went on indefinite hiatus in 2020 and production halt in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic, and the last in GMA Network before moving to TV5 in 2023.

In 2020, Eat Bulaga! re-aired several of its most memorable Lenten specials due to the COVID-19 pandemic that resulted in the three-month suspension of its live production. During the 2020 Holy Week, the three episodes from the 2019 Lenten Special were aired instead.
On 9 April 2022, it was announced that three past episodes from Lenten Specials between 2007 and 2014 would be re-aired, but digitally remastered.
On 30 March 2023, it was also announced that digitally remastered versions of past episodes from 2006 and 2017 would be aired, together with reruns of inspiring episodes from Bawal Judgmental. This year's Holy Tuesday and Wednesday episodes were opened by performances from Ice Seguerra and the Broadway Boys.

- In the certain episode of Eat Bulaga's Lenten Special 2002, the episode's scene in which SexBomb Girls member Jopay Paguia acts emotional, inspired frontman Monty Macalino of Filipino alternative rock band Mayonnaise to write a song about the aforementioned SexBomb Girls member in the same year. The band sent the song's demo tape to Jopay as a gift. Two years later, in 2004, Mayonnaise officially released their single, titled "Jopay", and soon thereafter topped the charts and became one of the band's famous OPM hits.
