Barangay Bulagaan (also referred to as Bulagaan, previously referred to as Bulagaan University) is a long-running and iconic segment of Eat Bulaga! mainly featuring its hosts delivering "knock-knock" jokes in the form of a song.

After the show moved to TV5, the segment replaced the classroom format and replaced it with a setting similar to the segment's initial successor, Da Bar: Dabarkads Eatery.

History[]

Bulagaan University (1995-2001, 2004-2019, 2022-2023)[]

The segment is in a classroom setting with the hosts divided into groups or pairs and usually dressed in school uniforms. Each group must answer the teacher's question by integrating their answer into a knock-knock joke. After performing, each group's performance would be graded using a giant roulette wheel with spaces from 00 to 100 (counted by 10's). The group with the lowest score will be punished at the end of the segment. The hosts then go on a free-for-all, chasing and throwing cream pies and spraying silly strings at each other and at the studio audience. The Eat Bulaga! hosts mainly participate in the segment, but special celebrity guests may occasionally join the segment.

The segment takes place in an eatery with the hosts divided into groups of customers. Each group will be basing their knock-knock jokes on the food items indicated on a menu provided by Ms. Tapsi, as played by Ryzza Mae Dizon. After all performances have concluded, the hosts then go on a free-for-all, chasing and throwing cream pies and spraying silly strings at each other and at the studio audience. While at the barangay, Mayor Jose has pails of water to splash on the barangay folks.

Spinoffs[]

Bulagaan Olympics (2000-2023)[]

Starting the year 2000, the show introduced Bulagaan Olympics, which eliminates the knock-knock jokes and introduces a physical aspect to the classes at Bulagaan University. The segment mainly features the hosts being divided into the Blue and Yellow teams where they compete to be the fastest team to accomplish an obstacle course.

Eat Star Café (2005)[]

In 2005, the segment had a short-lived spin-off known as Eat Star Café. The spin-off had the same concept, except it is in a karaoke bar setting instead of a classroom.

Bulagaan: The Concert (2012)[]

In 2012, two editions of a spin-off titled Bulagaan: The Concert were aired where the university students performed parodies of popular music, instead of the usual knock-knock.

Da Bar: Dabarkads Eatery (2023)[]

DaBarEaterylogo

Prior to regaining the Eat Bulaga! title after the move to TV5, the show introduced a knock-knock joke portion similar to Bulagaan under the name Da Bar: Dabarkads Eatery. Most of its elements, such as the segment being led by Ryzza Mae Dizon's Miss Tapsi, would be retained in the Barangay Bulagaan segment. Da Bar would be referenced in the backdrop for Barangay Bulagaan with its name behind some of the hosts' tables.

Trivia[]

  • The 8 July 2017 and 26 May 2018 episodes of Bulagaan University was replayed in full on Monday, 27 April 2020 and Monday, 25 May 2020, respectively. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic that resulted in the suspension of all live shows, Eat Bulaga! opted to replay throwback videos of some of its most iconic segments and other special presentations from way back in the past.
  • The spinning wheel was reintroduced during the 2005 Hala Bira sa ULTRA special where Jimmy Santos spun a wheel with grades from 65 to 100. Soon after, the wheel would be changed into the first 10 multiples of 10, which would become the standard for future episodes.
