Macho Men 2019 is an edition of Eat Bulaga!'s original dance contest for men who are talented, good-looking, and physically fit. The segment premiered on 30 September 2019 and concluded on 2 November 2019.
The competition was one of the 15 Tatak Eat Bulaga! segments revived as part of the noontime show's 40th anniversary celebration.[1] The short-lived and rapid-fire revival of the segments aimed to give the new generation of Filipinos an opportunity to experience the show's several iconic and original contests. Winners were scheduled to face off in the Tatak Eat Bulaga! Grand Showdown in mid-2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic postponed the final competition indefinitely.
The theme music of the segment is the 1978 hit "Macho Man" by the Village People.
Jonas Marabe, the 25-year-old "gymnast" of Pasig City, was hailed as the grand winner at the end of the competition. He astounded the judges by performing aerial gymnastics with a partner while suspended high above the ground on a German wheel.[2]
Overview
Auditions
The contest was open to men between 18 and 30 years old who are talented, good-looking, and physically fit. Early auditions occurred before the beginning of the contest to preselect the first ten contestants who will appear in the pilot episode of the contest. Auditions were held at APT Studios.
The auditions continued during the daily rounds to give more aspirants an opportunity to join the competition. New men were added daily to fill in the vacancies left by the three contestants who competed the day before.
Daily rounds
The daily rounds occurred on weekdays and were primarily hosted by Jose Manalo. Secondary hosts interviewed the audience judges with their pickup lines and comments about the contestants.
Each day, the hosts randomly drew the names of three contestants who were then pitted against one another. The contestants showcased their dance moves and their physiques while dressed in different outfits that matched the theme of their prepared performances.
A total of 40 people from the studio audience were invited to judge the competition. Each person was tasked to write the name of their chosen contestant inside a folded card. Whichever name received the most votes took home ₱15,000 and advanced to the weekly finals. Eliminated contestants received a consolation prize of ₱10,000.
Wildcard rounds
After the regular daily rounds, eliminated contestants received the opportunity to return to the competition in the wildcard daily rounds. The wildcard winners then competed in the last regular weekly finals, which determined the final contestants who would advance to the grand finals.
Weekly finals
The weekly finals occurred on Saturdays, with the exception of the final week which took place on a Monday. Jose Manalo served as the primary host of the episodes.
The contestants competed once more against each other, showcasing their dance moves and physiques during their performances. Each episode narrowed them down into the three best finalists who would advance to the semifinal rounds.
A total of 80 individuals made up the panel of judges for the weekly finals. Two or three guest celebrity judges were included in the panel, while the rest of the panel were filled by audience members. Weekly winners received ₱20,000.
Semifinal rounds
The four-day semifinal rounds took place from 29 October to 1 November 2019. Three contestants each day were randomly selected to showcase their dance moves and physiques during their production number.
A total of seven finalists advanced to the grand finals. Each of them received ₱10,000 and additional prizes from the segment's sponsors.
Grand finals
The grand finals occurred on Saturday, 2 November 2019. Jose Manalo served as the main host of the segment, while Maine Mendoza, Pauleen Luna, and Wally Bayola acted as secondary hosts who interviewed the audience members with their comments and pickup lines.
The opening production was a sing-and-dance number from actress Lovi Poe who performed with the seven Macho Men grand finalists. Lovi Poe also judged the competition along with actor Joshua Zamora, Anytime Fitness-Marcos Highway club manager Concon Lico Rodriguez, Anytime Fitness head coach Clarice Antoinette Aquino, and Kapuso hunk Jak Roberto.
The seven grand finalists then competed against one another for the final time with their ultimate level-up themed performances. After the performances, each contestant exchanged pickup lines with members of the studio audience.
Jonas Marabe of Pasig City, the 25-year-old "gymnast" who danced with a partner while hanging onto a round steel bar, was hailed as the grand winner of the competition. He took home ₱100,000 as the grand prize, ₱5,000 worth of gift certificates from Pampanga's Best Bacon, and ₱10,000 from DCA Powertools. After the competition, he was slated to compete against the winners of other revived segments in the Tatak Eat Bulaga! Grand Showdown. However, the final competition was postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Paulo "Pau" Magnayon, the "pirate" of Antipolo, Rizal, took home the title of first runner-up. He received ₱30,000.
