Pinoy Henyo is one of the most popular and most iconic game segments of Eat Bulaga!. Since its inception in 2004, Pinoy Henyo has become a staple parlor game for people of every background, age, gender, socioeconomic status, religion, and more.

With different editions throughout its run, the game has truly become a defining "Tatak Eat Bulaga!" segment. Eat Bulaga! host Joey de Leon has dubbed the segment as the "pambansang laro ng bayan" for its remarkable popularity as a Filipino parlor game. Over time, a new title of "paboritong laro ng bayan" was given to the segment for it being a favorite in many Filipino occasions.

Overview

2004 format

The original and classic Pinoy Henyo on its inaugural launch in 2004 has a much longer format. 3 pairs of contestants play the game. The first round is called Talas Henyo, in which 5 human choices will show up, which the contestants must observe and put into memory everything they see on the 5 human choices. The contestants then will be asked several questions regarding the choices. A pair needs to provide 1 correct answer to advance to the next round. Only 2 pairs can advance to the next round, while the 3rd pair who will fail to provide the correct answer to the question will be eliminated from the game.

The second round is called Word Henyo, in which the 2 pairs of contestants must spell out the correct spelling of a specific word or phrase from the jumbled magnetic letters on a board under a certain time limit. The fastest pair who can provide the correct spelling will advance to the jackpot round, and the other pair will be eliminated from the game.

The jackpot round has a similar concept as the traditional parlor game Twenty Questions, but instead of limiting the number of questions, the game has a time limit. The pair will play a guessing game. One part of the pair will act as a guesser and the other as a clue-giver. A word is placed on top of the guesser's forehead. The goal of the game is to correctly guess the word in under a certain time limit. The word-guesser must ask a series of deductive questions that becomes more specific over time, while the other player must only reply with "Oo" (yes), "Hindi" (no), or "Pwede" (maybe/possibly). The pair who manages to answer the correct word within the time limit wins the jackpot prize.

In the later editions of Pinoy Henyo, the 2004 jackpot round format will become the standard, popular, and iconic format that the game will popularly be known for.

Standard format

In most editions, based from the 2004 jackpot round format, there are generally three pairs each day that play in the daily elimination round. A word is placed on top of the guesser's forehead. The goal of the game is to correctly guess the word in under two minutes. The word-guesser must ask a series of deductive questions that becomes more specific over time, while the other player must only reply with "Oo" (yes), "Hindi" (no), or "Pwede" (maybe/possibly). Other replies will incur a three-second penalty. The pair with the fastest time heads to the jackpot round.

There are two variations of the jackpot round.

In the original format, one player is assigned to be the guesser while the other player is assigned to be the clue-giver. Unlike the elimination round, the guesser must guess specific categories this time instead of a word. Meanwhile, the other player must provide words that are examples of or are lrelated to that specific category. For instance, if the players are given the specific category "Mga Sinasawsaw sa Ketchup" to guess, the clue-giver may give words such as "french fries", "hotdog", and "chicken nuggets" as hints. The players must guess three out of the four provided categories in under two minutes. Guessing categories in the jackpot round will award the pair additional cash prizes in addition to their current winnings. The original jackpot round format was used from May 2009 to March 2010.

In the reformatted jackpot round, the winning pair must guess words this time around instead of categories. The players are given ten words. After the elimination round, the pair will play again by taking turns this time to correctly guess any three of the ten words in under three minutes. The players can opt to pass if they are having difficulty with the word. For every word guessed, an additional cash prize is added to their current winnings.

The reformatted jackpot round was more favored than the original version and would become the model for the jackpot rounds of Pinoy Henyo editions after March 2010.

Overtime, Pinoy Henyo also adapted a single-elimination tournament format in order to bring more competition to the game. Generally, the daily winners advance to the semi-finals to compete with one another. The semi-finalists advances to the qualifying rounds until only several pairs are left to compete in the grand finals, which would finally determine the "Ultimate Pinoy Henyo" champions.

Editions

Throughout its run, Pinoy Henyo has evolved into many different themes and editions to cater to particular groups of people, frequently modifying the segment's title to indicate the contestants of the edition. Its gameplay has also experienced some slight changes over time, depending on the capability and intellect of the contestants.

2004

The original and classic Pinoy Henyo on its inaugural launch in 2004 has a much longer format. 3 pairs of contestants play the game. The first round is called Talas Henyo, in which 5 human choices will show up, which the contestants must observe and put into memory everything they see on the 5 human choices. Only 2 pairs can advance to the next round, while the 3rd pair who will fail to provide the correct answer to the question will be eliminated from the game.[1][2]

The second round is called Word Henyo, in which the 2 pairs of contestants must spell out the correct spelling of a specific word or phrase from the jumbled magnetic letters on a board under a certain time limit. The fastest pair who can provide the correct spelling will advance to the jackpot round, and the other pair will be eliminated from the game.[3]

The pair who manages to answer the correct word within the time limit wins the jackpot prize, amounting to ₱100,000.[4]

In the later editions of Pinoy Henyo, the 2004 jackpot round format will become the standard, popular, and iconic format that the game will popularly be known for.

2005

The 2005 edition received a major overhaul from the 2004 edition. Pairs of contestants will now only play the guessing game based from the 2004 jackpot round format. The guesser will be placed inside a tank and must guess the word under a certain time limit, but the twist is that oxygen bubbles will accumulate and build up on the tank within the time frame of the game. The guesser must correctly guess the word as early as possible to stop the accumulation of the oxygen bubbles.

One notable event is from the 4 June 2005 episode of Eat Bulaga!, in which EB Host Julia Clarete, who was claustrophobic, fainted and was rushed to the hospital while enclosed on the tank during the Pinoy Henyo segment after the build up of many oxygen bubbles inside the tank.[5]

2006

Youtu.be-4dw0sUWmu10 (2)

This edition of Pinoy Henyo (January 2006–January 2007) is exclusively played by the Eat Bulaga! hosts. Players are randomly paired with one another by picking the names of the hosts from a fishbowl-like container. Another name of an Eat Bulaga! host is randomly picked to sit on the collapsing seat of a dunk tank. One player must attempt to guess the word placed on his or her forehead by asking a series of deductive questions, while the other player must affirm or negate the questions in order to lead the guesser to the word. Each pair is given two minutes. If a pair correctly guesses the word within the time limit, the seat of the dunk tank collapses, dunking the Eat Bulaga! host into the water. If the pair fails to guess the word within two minutes, the person in the dunk tank is safe.

2009

The revival of Pinoy Henyo (May 2009–September 2009, November 2009–January 2010) was opened up to ordinary people of all ages, races, gender identities, and socioeconomic status who wanted to try out the show's signature word-guessing game. Each day, three pairs compete against one another in order to guess the word in under two minutes. For each pair, an Eat Bulaga! host who is holding a particular cash prize is assigned to go inside a small chamber. If the pair correctly guesses their word within two minutes, they will receive the cash prize held by the Eat Bulaga! host. If the pair fails to guess the word, an unpleasantly sticky or messy liquid substance is poured all over the Eat Bulaga! host from above the chamber, and will not receive any cash prize. The pair with the fastest time advances to the jackpot round.

In the jackpot round, one player is assigned to be the guesser while the other player is assigned to be the clue-giver. Unlike the elimination round, the guesser must guess three out of the four specific categories this time instead of a word. Meanwhile, the other player must provide words that are examples of or are related to the specific category. For instance, if the players are given the specific category "Mga Gamit ng Barbero" to guess, the clue-giver may give words such as "suklay", "gunting", "kapa", and "hair clipper" as hints. The players are given two minutes. Guessing categories in the jackpot round will award the pair additional cash prizes.

From time to time, celebrities and other well-known personalities have been invited to take on the challenge of Pinoy Henyo, which are usually special editions held on Saturdays.

PHPopCola09

Pinoy Henyo: Pop Cola Edition (7 September 2009–7 November 2009) is the continuation of the previous Pinoy Henyo, which has now been sponsored by Filipino soft drink brand Pop Cola. In order to join the game, aspiring contestants must bring three Pop Cola tansans or one Pop Cola bottle cap to the game's auditions. There is also a chance for homeviewers to become home partners and win cash prizes during the live broadcast of the segment.

The core game of the sponsored edition basically follows the same concept and rules as the previous edition. Pairs compete against one another in order to guess the word in under two minutes. For each pair, an Eat Bulaga! host who is holding a particular cash prize is assigned to go inside the chamber. If the pair correctly guesses their word within two minutes, they will receive the cash prize held by the Eat Bulaga! host. If the pair fails to guess the word, an sticky liquid substance is poured all over the Eat Bulaga! host from above the chamber, and the pair leaves empty-handed. The pair with the fastest timeadvances to the jackpot round.

In the jackpot round, one player is assigned to be the guesser while the other player is assigned to be the clue-giver. The guesser must guess three out of the four specific categories based on the examples given by the clue-giver. The players are given two minutes. The pair receives an additional cash prize for each category guessed.

Pinoy Henyo: Pop Cola Edition is the first edition to hold a grand game. The three pairs with the fastest time throughout the edition are invited back to take on the challenge of Pinoy Henyo for the last time. Cebuana friends Roselyn and Jocille were hailed as the grand winner after guessing their word the fastest, receiving more than ₱100,000 in cash prize. The grand finals was held on 7 November 2009.

2010

Youtu.be-IVzIPzhV-dw

Pinoy Henyo: Pop Cola Edition - Isa Pa! (1 February 2010–27 March 2010) is the second edition of Pinoy Henyo to be sponsored by the soft drink brand Pop Cola. The subtitle "Isa Pa!" is added because a third member must accompany the pair of players in the game by going inside the Pinoy Henyo chamber with an Eat Bulaga! host. If the third member's friends fail to guess the word in under two minutes during the daily rounds, he or she will be drenched in a messy liquid substance and the group will not receive any cash prize.

The core game of the sponsored edition basically follows the same concept as the previous editions with a slight twist. This time, every pair is given ₱20,000 in the beginning of the game. However, that initial cash prize decreases by ₱2,000 every 15 seconds once the word-guessing game begins. For example, if a pair guesses their word in 33 seconds, then their entire group will only receive ₱16,000 from their initial cash prize. Their third member will be saved from the Pinoy Henyo chamber and they will receive the additional cash prize that the Eat Bulaga! host is holding. If they are unable to guess the word, the group leaves empty-handed. The pair with the fastest time advances to the jackpot round.

In the jackpot round, one player is assigned to be the guesser while the other player is assigned to be the clue-giver. The guesser must guess three out of the four specific categories based on the examples given by the clue-giver. The players are given two minutes. The pair receives an additional cash prize for each category guessed.

Pinoy Henyo: Pop Cola Edition is the second edition to feature a grand game. The three pairs with the fastest time throughout the edition are invited back to take on the challenge of Pinoy Henyo for the last time. Gina Fernando, Vernie Torrero, and Mhatet Dacallos were hailed as the grand winners after guessing their word the fastest, receiving more than ₱100,000 in cash prize. The grand finals was held on 27 March 2010.

The original Pinoy Henyo (March 2010–May 2011) returned once again after the conclusion of Pinoy Henyo: Pop Cola Edition - Isa Pa!. The original titlecard is retained and the core game and rules of the segment remains the same. However, the jackpot round of the segment has been dramatically altered.

In the daily round, three pairs compete against one another by each guessing a word in under two minutes. For each pair, an Eat Bulaga! host who is holding a particular cash prize is assigned to go inside the chamber. If the pair correctly guesses their word within two minutes, they will receive the cash prize held by the Eat Bulaga! host. If the pair fails to guess the word, the pair leaves empty-handed. The pair with the fastest time advances to the jackpot round.

In the reformatted jackpot round, the winning pair must guess words this time around instead of categories like in previous editions. The players are given ten words. The pair will play again by taking turns this time in order to correctly guess any three of the ten words in under three minutes. The players can opt to pass if they are having difficulty guessing the word. For every word guessed, an additional cash prize is added to their current winnings. The maximum jackpot round winnings is ₱50,000.

The reformatted jackpot round of this edition would become the model for the jackpot rounds of future Pinoy Henyo editions.
